Planet of the Timmies

When I first started cycling, I was concerned by how close some vehicles came to me as they overtook, so I thought it would be interesting to get some actual figures on passing distances as opposed to a gut feeling. This project is a simple ultrasonic range-measuring device to allow me to measure the distance between me and passing vehicles.

I have written this description to help others build similar devices. However, the pages are still under construction as I’m putting them together during my lunch breaks. Please be patient!

Hardware

Arduino prototyping board Microprocessor: The heart of the system is an Arduino prototyping board, which are available for about £16.
Range Sensor: An SRF05 ultrasonic range sensor. Costs about £14.
LCD Module: A 16×2 character LCD module. I found mine on eBay for less than £5, but any similar LCD will do, and it will still work with other sized ones as well (16×1, 20×4 etc.)
